Our Golf Course
When I won the New Years Invitational at the club some 40 years ago, I knew this was a unique, historic club with something special. To be given the chance to set the course up for a new generation is truly an honor. I hope you enjoy your time at SPCC.
History
A Glorious Past
The Club opened as the Golf Club at Lakewood Estates in 1924, and since that time has been widely recognized for its 18 exceptional holes of golf, where legends such as Sam Snead, Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer, and Jack Nicklaus have walked its fairways. The course was designed by Herbert Strong, a golf professional from Kent, England, who later devoted his career to golf course architecture. More than 30 golf courses bear Herbert Strong’s signature, including Engineers Country Club on Long Island, Saucon Valley in Pennsylvania, Canterbury in Ohio, and the original Ponte Vedra Inn, where he designed the first island green, the ninth hole, in 1930.
And Now
A Modern Update for a Classic Layout
The Club’s recent re-grassing and refinement of its course was guided by former PGA Tour player and Tampa native Gary Koch. The renovation includes new playing surfaces throughout, featuring TifEagle greens and Bimini Bermuda fairways, ensuring the course remains one of the region’s most well-manicured and beautifully presented playing experiences.
The course retains its original Herbert Strong routing with no parallel fairways, thoughtfully nestled alongside a protected nature preserve, while still being just moments from the area’s celebrated beaches and vibrant downtown St. Petersburg. Now measuring 7,005 yards, the layout also features updated bunkering and more engaging green complexes, offering a fresh and compelling challenge for today’s more powerful championship players while remaining enjoyable for members of all levels.
